Whereas the premodern carnival celebrated and enacted the body politic by calling attention to the bounty and incorporation that is collective life, the modern holiday sanitizes the experience, removing it to the private space of the home. Desire and animality are not eliminated, but they are domesticated and subjected to rational control. In public space— the space of politics and collective living— the body comports itself as the rational, autonomous, and discrete being consistent with the metaphor of a social contract.
