The German philosopher Hermann Ebbinghaus suggests that we tend to soon forget new information that is no longer used. Suppose we hear ten new nouns in class on Monday. We can recall these terms and definitions as soon as we first encounter them. However, if we don't turn our attention repeatedly to these terms and definitions, we will forget about 40% in the first 24 hours. If we wait another 24 hours to see the information, we lose 60%.
