歌劇院建築本體高達37.7公尺，地下2層、地上6層，鋼筋混凝土構造，部份為鋼構造。 建築師伊東豐雄的設計概念是以人類最原始的「洞窟」、「地穴」為發想，繼而設計出美聲涵洞的曲牆建築。 主建築由五十八面曲牆組成，興建難度極高，甚至被稱為「全球最難蓋的房子」。
