Before conducting the main survey, the authors administered a pilot study to select an issue that undergraduates would likely know about and that they would perceive in a wide range of ways.After analyzing the pilot study, the authors decided to use climate change and gun control as the study’s foci because they were found to be the most familiar and the most likely to be controversial.In the main survey, the majority of students (91.1%) recognized gun possession as a controversial issue, as for climate change, 87.3% regarded it as a controversial social issue
