As an environmentally relevant metabolic group of microorganisms, the diversity of nitrate and nitrite reducing bacteria was determined along two soil profiles using functional genes for nitrate and nitrite reduction. Comparison of the structure of the nitrate and nitrite reducing bacterial community was performed on soils sampled in zones with different CO2 content. DGGE (Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis, a fingerpprinting method) profiles showed specific community structures as a function of soil CO2 content and physico -chemical parameters.
