Another factor linked to reading problems is low previous knowledge (that is, poor general knowledge) and a lack of width in vocabulary. When students lacked original knowledge about reading topics, understanding was affected. (Kintsch, 2013, Tarchi, 2010) Students with a basic understanding of what they are reading can link new information to what they already know. The original knowledge arises from experience by reading or hearing about topics or through family traditions. The student's general perception capabilities are also original educators. Students who read or who have been reading can access this knowledge when reading related topics, which can increase understanding. It is not known at this time, however, if there are mediated factors (such as active memory, decoding motivation) that may hinder original knowledge and comprehension impact reading.
