National Theatre of Great Britain.
Tours of English actors have become a regular phenomenon of our theatrical life. Over the past ten years, Soviet audiences have met a number of theatres and several major dramatic actors, ballet and opera masters of England. Recently, our guest was the National Theatre. The National Theatre is very young. Paradoxically, the country of ancient theatrical culture, the birthplace of Shakespeare, until recently did not have a national theater, although the need for its creation began to talk more than a hundred years ago. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Bernard Shaw even wrote the play "The Dark Lady of the Sonnets", whose main actor, Shakespeare, at the end gives a speech that it is time to create a national theater in England. in England there were no and no state theaters, and the theatrical business is entirely in the hands of entrepreneurs-commercials.
In 1949, the House of Commons of the English Parliament decided to build a building for the national theater. Thirteen years of no action was done to implement the ruling. It was not until 1962 that the troupe was established, measures were taken to partially fund it by the Arts Council and a place was set aside for the construction of the building, which was completed in 1973. The National Theatre began its work in the old Vic Theatre. The first performance took place on October 22, 1962. The theatre is in charge of Sir Laurence Olivier. The troupe has sixty people. The program of the theater is defined by three tasks: to put classical dramas of England and other countries, to restore on the stage interesting forgotten plays and to show significant new works of contemporary authors.
