with a hydraulic retention time of 3 days. After 15 days of preculture, the experiment began on May 15, 2019 and included four periods of 15 days each. From period one to period four, the designed influent mass percentage salinities achieved by adding seawater crystals were sequentially 0.8, 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 g/L. The influent wastewater was obtained by mixing nearby pond water and secondary wastewater from a nearby wastewater treatment plant and then adding chemically pure reagents (Zhao et al., 2018b). The influent wastewater characteristics are listed in Table 1. After one period, the water in the incubators was rapidly replaced using designed water for the next period, and then the next period began using continuous flow mode. The water depth of the incubator remained at 40 cm during the entire experimental period.
