6 Despite its oft-touted benefits, some prominent companies do not allow employees to telecommute. One of the first things the newly hired CEO of Yahoo did in 2013 was to inform employees that they would no longer be allowed to work remotely. While flex time was not banned outright at Yahoo, it, too, was discouraged. Other companies, including Best Buy and Reddit, have followed suit, shuttering satellite offices and limiting telecommuting programs. Leaders of these companies cite a lack of communication and collaboration as top issues behind their decisions, arguing that working remotely limits critical workplace creativity that arises only when working in the same physical location. Such decisions have garnered mixed reactions. Teleworking detractors defend the decision to add more physical availability between employers and employees, while telework proponents say that the decision to ban remote work is antiquated and unfriendly to families.
